What Is the Dartford Crossing?

The Dartford Crossing carries the M25 across the River Thames on the eastern edge of London, connecting Kent (south) and Essex (north). It consists of two bored tunnels for northbound traffic and the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge for southbound traffic.

There are no toll booths — the crossing uses ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras to capture vehicle registrations, which are then matched to payments. You must pay either before or after crossing — not at the crossing itself.

When Do Charges Apply?

🕕 Charge hours: 06:00 – 22:00, every day

Charges apply every day including weekends and bank holidays, between 06:00 and 22:00. Between 22:00 and 06:00 there is no charge. Unlike the ULEZ or Congestion Charge, there is no Christmas free period — charges apply on Christmas Day if you cross between 06:00–22:00.

Full Price Table

Prices vary by vehicle type and payment method. Having a prepay account saves money versus paying one-off each time.
